Halloween and Older Children
December 3, 2007
Search the web and you will find thousands of party ideas for the younger ghouls and goblins, however, it may be a challenge to indulge your teenagers, costume and party ideas on a shoestring budget.
A great way to get your older children involved is to give them a purpose. Meaning let them design the all of the spookiness for the house and yard.
To give the project more importance, assign them a budget and allow them to do all of the legwork and creative work. You may be pleasantly surprised, that some of your frugal ways have indeed rubbed off on them.
It is important not to interfere with the process, all you should do is supervise and act as a sounding board for ideas. While all of this is taking place, you should plan a bit of a surprise for your hardworking frugal Halloween set designer.
When it is time for the great unveiling of your teenagers work, you may offer to order pizza and take a well deserved trip to the video store in order to rent a few creepy movies that can be enjoyed by your teenager and one or two of his or her closest friends.
Allow the older kids to stay home and hand out candy, watch videos and eat pizza while you escort the younger goblins on a trick and treat adventure.
By using this suggestion, you are able to teach your teenager not only the value of a dollar but also money management skill they (hopefully) will continue to strengthen and build upon. Another great benefit is you are able to show your teenager that you value their opinion on important household decisions.
