Halloween Traditions
December 3, 2007
I have always enjoyed the Halloween festivities since childhood; however once I became a mother the festivities took on some new and interesting traditions.
When faced with having to buy treats, decorations and costumes, not to mention the yearly trip to the local pumpkin patch, I had to devise ways to keep to the household budget.
So, I became a self-proclaimed Queen of budgeting. I shop for decorations a year in advance, I only by candy that is on sale and I scour the internet for unique Halloween treat ideas for class parties.
A great way to save money on costumes is to visit a second hand store or simply let the little ones rummage thru the closets, attic and basement. You would be amazed at what they come up with; last year my oldest used tin foil and boxes to become the tin man. Both children love being able to pilfer thru the old clothes and discarded items that have found their way into storage.
As for the pumpkin patch, I decided last year that the kids would grow their own. Much to everyone’s delight we became the proud owners of pumpkins ranging in sizes from large to small. In fact, a few friends have also dropped by to pick pumpkins and to get everyone in the spirit we hitched a wagon to the four-wheeler and was even able to replicate a hayride.
Truth be told, you need not bust your budget to enjoy a howling good time come Halloween. All you really need is a bit of creativity and imagination.
