There’s the local service that you would have to maintain, and you have other extras on the phone, then you also have the long distance on your phone that can all add up to a heavy monthly expense. So now, we need to reduce this monthly cost.

Caller I.D.

Ask yourself if you truly would need all of the ad-on features. Like the caller identification, this costs around 6 dollars every month, would you really need this? Are you getting enough calls for this certain feature or have a stalker that you would need to keep track of the one calling? You can try and think this through. You can save a hefty 72 dollars annually if this is removed.

Purchase an Answering Machine

This will serve to be cheaper than having other features like caller I.D. When you think of it, it would even be more convenient than you going home and having to browse on your caller I.D. to see who called but instead, you’ll just have to press the button to play back all the voice messages of people who called and why they called. There would be instances that you wouldn’t even have to call back and it would be tedious in a sense to look at a number in a caller I.D. then call them up and ask why they called. Not to mention that having an answering machine won’t give you monthly charges.

Call Waiting

There’s also the call waiting feature. However, to a lot of people, this can be very important when they have a lot and important called due to their job or occupation that they may need this option. But if you’re job does not entail this and your phone line is just necessary for house calls and has nothing to do with work, then ask your self, is call waiting necessary? How often and how long do you talk to someone? Are you the type who likes an occasional long conversation over the phone? If not, then we suggest that you take this feature off.

Three Way Calling

How many times would you need to talk to two persons at the same time? Do you think you would really need this? It can be that you might need it often especially if it is work related, but if not, imagine how much money you will be wasting to having something that you don’t necessarily use.

Long Distance Direct Dial

Do you need a long distance direct dial? Do you have a relative or have someone very important that you would need to have constant communication with? If not, you can do this without the long distance direct dial on your phone. That just incase you would need to call someone abroad or outside your state, there’s always your handy cell phone in reach. People usually opt to just use a prepaid card when calling abroad or making long distance calls. This can be a cheaper and a more efficient alternative.

Installing a VoIP or Other Internet Software

With technology today like having a “voice over IP” which is a device where in you can place calls through your Internet connection. This can save you a lot of money when it comes to long distance calls. There are lots of internet software that has call features. Like in messengers and other instant messaging device.

MAKING A DECISION

If you are single and the only one using the phone at home, then it would be easy making a decision on whether or not you would need these add-on features, but if you’re living with a couple of people, you might need to sit down with them and talk about whether or not all would be in favor of having a certain feature on your phone, since different people may have different needs in regards to phone use.

CALLING YOUR LOCAL PHONE COMPANY

It is usual that a person having a phone line wouldn’t make calls to their local phone company. But after reading the following you would find it necessary to do so.

Local companies usually have promotions every now and then; you would have to keep yourself updated of these promos. So make it a point that you call your local phone company. They may also have better features to offer that may be more beneficial for you as an alternative for the current feature that you have.

There are instances when the cost of instate long distance won’t be cheaper as to calling out state calls but you would need to check with the local phone company just to make sure. Be aware of these things so you would know how much you are spending for when making these calls.

You may also have the option of shopping around for the best long distance rates there is amongst different long distance companies. Usually with these long distance companies who are in competition with each other tend to create great deals making long distance calls all the more cheaper. Also make use of the off peak hours when the rates usually are cheaper compared to the peak hours of making long distance calls.

Check with the local phone company in comparison with how much you’ll be spending in renting a phone monthly or having your own personal phone at home. Usually it is cheaper to have your personal phone than to rent a phone and pay monthly for it. Either way, you can call the local phone company just to make sure.

They may say that reducing your cell phone bill is easier but may be a daunting task mainly for the reason that it has lots of pay-per-view service. There are a lot of add-ons to your cell phone service features than there is to a land line phone. To give some would be the internet browser on your cell phone, long distance, roaming, data services, picture/ video messaging and the basic caller ID, voicemail services, and 3G calls. All of these features have added cause in your phone plan packages. So the best way to eliminate unnecessary spending is to do away with features that you barely even use. There are even times that you don’t know how to use such features because you don’t need them and not interested to use them. Just take down all the important features that you would need in you cell phone and the rest can be just deducted. This is also applicable when you are just about to choose your phone plan, at least choose a plan that is well suited for you and even avail yourself of packages that has free airtime and free text messages so you can save up.

Cell phone may seem easier to manage when it comes to features but don’t be deceived. Know that since your cell phone is an extension of you, there’s a possibility of always making unnecessary transactions or calls.
